Love “wins”, but “winning” isn’t everything

I have to come out of the closet here as a Rob Bell fan.  I have enjoyed his fresh approach, his embracing of new media to spread the Christian message, his relateable anecdotes, and the way he could explain timeless truth without resorting to “church language”.  His NOOMA videos were invaluable in getting the high school students I volunteer with to engage with spiritual concepts and questions.  His books presented Christian truth in a way that would keep the attention of a near-hostile agnostic. I have been quick to recommend his resources when asked by members of the younger generation where they might turn for information.

Light of the world, a city on an… island?

We all know that it’s hard enough to live a Christian life of integrity and courage in our normal, everyday existence.  Can you imagine doing it in front of 10 million viewers every week?

I don’t know if you’re like us and have basically ignored Survivor since about 2005, but the newest season of the franchise, Survivor: Redemption Island, has a contestant that is taking Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount seriously.  We are all familiar with “blessed are the poor in spirit” and “blessed are the meek”, but there is an equally powerful teaching about those who would follow Jesus’ teachings (more…)
